Wasting Time
Posted by daveg under Uncategorized
Welp, I’m leaving Liberia tomorrow and I have no computer.
I thought I gave appropriate respect to “Latin American Time” in the country that is least latin of all my travels, but I apparently did not. My laptop was supposed to be here on Monday or Weds. Respecting time as they do here, I figured it’d be Weds. Well, apparently it is maybe Thursday or Friday. I’m done with Liberia. I’m getting my money back, but there is no way to get back the time. A six month vacation seems like a long time but it is not enough when you can burn a week sitting in one town rotting alone in a hotel room watching movies on TNT or Discovery channel in Spanish.
So now I’m going to resume heading south. Hopefully we’re going to go to Atena, Costa Rica and stay at some friend of Theo’s guest house for a day. THEN I’m going to make another attempt at getting the same laptop on Friday in San Jose. The US did its part and got the laptop to San Jose on Monday AM, but apparently its been stuck in customs for 4 days. ARGH!!@#
Anyway, I’m at a Jesus Freak of an internet cafe, so I should probably stop writing writing so I don’t get kicked out and the “iProtectYou” alarm stops going off.

Hey bebe…no laptop, no worries…go meet some more good people and find something pretty to look at and tell us all about it when you come across an atheist cafe =)

Hey D, it doesn’t look like you’ll be able to get this in time, but I found another mini-computer that I thought you would be interested in…

Better luck in the next town. Until you do find another digital friend you can still use one of those archaic forms of recording ones thoughts — pen and paper.

You mean those commercials we see of the happy FedEx driver delivering the package promptly to some poor Central American village, impressively foot-dribbling a soccer ball tossed his way by a ragtag group of local kids while on his way is all a lie?!

Yeah. That is a load of BS. FedEx especially as they contract out delivery to satellite counties. If you’re mailing internationally, the best way to go is DHL. Atleast you get DHL trucks driving the countryside instead of some “FedEx” GreatWall passenger car trying to make it across 2 hours of dirt road.

Spanish television … ick. That is a special version of hell. So you were solo in a hotel room? what happened to your travel compadres? did they go ahead while you waited for your lappy?
What is the weather like down there at the moment? Rainy/dry/hot/cold?
Chin up dude… What are the highs without the lows?
Said easily from my comfy chair in the air conditioning, of course.

Well DaveG, I’d have to agree with Gary, keep your chin up.
I think you’re probably right at that time mark of the pseudo-homesickness. Not that you’d want to come home of course, but more so the woes of the non-American lifestyle. AKA: The inability to get whatever you want, whenever you want it. …and then complain about it. =]
I’m sure these things will work out just fine for you. Plus, you’re getting closer to the ‘modern’ parts of your trip. I think Argentina and such will be fantastic.
